24 Hour Recital

Press Reports

On July 15th 1986 a world record was created at Bangalore by an 18-year-old dancer for a marathon 24-hour public performance with live music. Prasanna inspired many young male dancers to take up dancing seriously by this act.

It all happened when he was getting prepared to take up the vidwath (proficiency) exam conducted by the Karnataka Secondary exam board. A dancer had to perform for more than four hours to pass this exam. The rehearsals and practice extended for more than 7 to 8 hours and Prasanna practised for more than 15 hours everyday. These non-stop rehearsals inspired him to create a record for a marathon performance by dancing non-stop for 24 hours.

Thus at the tender age of 18, without any help from the govt or any public agency, Prasanna with the help of his very supportive parents, brought together more than 50 dance musicians in the field of Carnatic music to help him in this endeavour.

On that eventful day, all dancers in Bangalore came together to support this great event. For one whole and whole night people waited and encouraged him to create a record.

Finally on July 15th 1986 at 9.30 a.m. Prasanna had created a record for a non-stop 24 hour pure Bharathanatya marathon recital with live music throughout and Prasanna Kasthuri’s name (formerly known as K R S Prasanna) was history.

G Gurumurthy, who is now a well known mrudangist in Bangalore accompanied Prasanna on the mrudanga for 24 hours continously. Thus this 24 hour dance and mrudanga performance was a record in its own sort which earned an entry into the "Limca Book of Records".
